I've seen a few fake competition posts recently advertising 'Win 1 of 50 Family Cruises' or 'Win 1 of 50 Family Trips To Disney World'. The best thing to do when entering any competition on Facebook is to check out the credibility of the page first. The 'Disney World' competition that was doing the rounds was supposedly being promoted directly via 'Walt Disney World', yet when I clicked on the link to the hosting page, for starters it had only been created about a month earlier and only had about 2000 likes. The real Walt Disney World page has a blue tick beside its title to show that it's the official page. It also had a few more than 2000 likes - more that 13 million actually. Disney World has also been around for decades so like other well known companies and brands their Facebook pages weren't created yesterday.
The other thing that I have noticed with scam competitions on Facebook is that they were all 'like and share' to win. Many small, local businesses run these kinds of competitions to draw more attention to their page and they are all probably 100% legitimate. However, when a large, international brand runs a competition giving away a high end prize you can be certain that there will be just a little more effort required than just liking and sharing a Facebook post.
I'm not sure what benefit anyone gets out of running fake competitions like this, maybe they just get a kick out of seeing so many people enter, but in any case be on the lookout and always check the legitimacy of the page before entering. Happy comping everyone.
