Today I received a voicemail message from a lady at the college saying she was calling regarding my competition entry. I had forgotten when the competitions end date was so thoughts like 'maybe I've won!' were running through my head. I returned her call and she asked if she could ask me some questions about my entry. Firstly she asks me 'what made you enter the competition?'. Ummm, gosh what do I tell her? Do I tell her it's because I was interested in enrolling or that it was the $20k prize? I was honest and told her that I entered for the prize money. Then she asks if I'm actually interested in any of the courses they have on offer. I said I was interested - the competition was still running and I figured that if they haven't drawn it yet they may toss my entry out if I sounded uninterested, otherwise they would just go through and contact each entrant after the promotion had finished. I've entered many similar competitions in the past where I know they are just fishing for sales leads. When they call I'm usually honest and tell them I'm not interested in their products, then they tell me 'that's ok, we will still pop your entry in the draw', - sure you will.
So the conversation ended with the lady telling me that she'd have a careers advisor call me to discuss which course would be best for me. Oh boy!
So does anyone else ever enter these types of competitions where you know that a salesperson is going to contact you? Do you tell them you are interested thinking this may better your chances at winning the prize? Has anyone ever won a competition like this even after saying 'I'm just in it for the prize'? Think I've got a chance at the $20k? We'll see!
